Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery 2003, land rover discovery, independent shop

Question
I need to replace the engine in my Discovery.  Could you give me an estimate on the cost for replacing the engine.

Answer
Hi Karen,

depends on many factors: New, rebuilt or salvaged; dealer installed or independent (indy) shop, where you live and availability of parts.

Engine block starts at $5000 or more, then there is install labour, additional parts, taxes.  $12,000 OUCH.  Rebuilt engines are less costly, maybe $9000.  Salvaged engines could save you even more, $4000 to $7000- the labour is the ??? cost, some yards include install with purchase.

Consider hooking up with a local LR club, perhaps they could help you find a good shop and replacement engine.

2003 engines had design problem with oil pump connection, so consider that with any engine you buy.

Probably better to buy another Disco - about the same price.  Probably get some good buys too with more features, lower mileage, etc.

If you know of a good indy shop, they could help you save some $$$.  Consider salvage engine too: diamonds in the rough, low mileage, extra parts (www.car-part.com).

If you want help finding an independent shop, send me an email and what city you would want the repair done.  I'll try to find a local indy shop for you, if I can.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
