Land Rover Repair: discovery v8 1999 starting problem, battery cables, negative cable

Question
Hi

I have a discovery 1999 v8 petrol gas converted, recently the car didn't start. i tried jump leading it and it worked the car started. After taking it to my local garage i learned that it needed a new alternator, so i took the battery out to put it on charge so that i can use the car on a charged battery until i save up a couple of quid to carry out the alternator repairs. when putting the battery back in to the discovery i sooner learned that the car didn't want to start not even the c/locking. (please note that the alarm doesn't sound as well the led flash on the dash bored does not flash as well) ok so i went to my dealers to get a eka code after buying that i tried to input the code via the drivers door lock and there is no response to it at all. there is no flashes no alarm beep nothing so i really would like some help and advice could you please tell me what is going wrong and thanks very much (yes i have the manual and i have done as it said exactly)

Answer
Hi Adam,

sounds like an electrical problem.  Was the temp battery fully charged?   Did you install the battery cables correctly?   No electrics usually means no battery.

I'd reinstall the original battery and see what happens.  If that is not possible, disconnect the negative cable for a few minutes and reattach.  You should have some electrics - if not - a fuse or relay has been blown.  Perhaps the jump start triggered the problem and it finally gave in when you installed the temp battery.

I once jumped started my father-in-law's van with my Disco and for some strange reason I blew a fuse.  LR electrics are sensitive and its quite possible your problem could be fuse related.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
