Land Rover Repair: land rover trans, gearbox repair, transmission failure

Hello I have a chance to purchase a 97 discovery, the only problem with it is that when you first shift into drive you have to wait about 30 seconds for it to let you go.  Other than that it drives fine and has while doing this for some time.  Is it ok to run like this or is something going to happen like total failure if I do.

That's a sign that fluid is not getting pumped through the transmission properly.  In most cases this symptom is followed by transmission failure.  How quickly?  No one knows.  But that's where this vehcile's transmission if probably headed.  So if you buy the car factor in the $3,000 cost of a gearbox repair.
