Answer
Hi Drew,

I wonder how many LR service managers would drool over a problem like this.  Hard to believe a dealer would give up all that labour profit by not trying to reset that check engine light (CEL).  At least not the guys I know.

Since you don't really know the history of the vehicle, I would first start with the essentials:
change spark plug and wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter, oil filter and fuel filter replacement.  Oil change and coolant change should be done too.

There is a way I've heard to reset the OBD:

Within the engine compartment there is a fuse box.  WITH THE KEY OFF disconnect the fuse marked #7 'Fuel Injectors' for 10 seconds or so. Reinstall fuse and then start the engine.

Most times the fault lies with the O2 sensors.  You can check the OBD display found under the passenger seat for a code.  The '95 is OBD equipped vehicle and should not be confused with the OBDII.  You can search the internet for OBD code explanation - they will give you a general notion of where the trouble is.

Next step is to make sure the ignition timing is good, the spark is at its best.  Most garages can verify the timing and even advance your distributor if needed.

All that I have mentioned so far is reasonable work for a 'new' used Disco and not too expensive.  IF you start to swap out parts, like the MAF, TPS, coil, distributor, thats when the repairs become expensive and you really become baptised to LR ownership.

Take the less expensive route first.  Most dealerships would have done that and charge you a hefty price PLUS LABOUR!!

You could have a local garage perform a cylinder pressure test to determine if the headgasket is sound.  Coolant flush and oil change can only be a good thing for any '95 Disco - as far as I'm concerned.

Other than that, you would have to start to test the other components within the EMS (engine management system) that may be triggering the CEL.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
