Land Rover Repair: 98 Discovery drivers side door latch, door latch, discovery

Greetings,
I hav a 98 Discovery and the drivers side door at this point will only open when the locking button is manually pulled upward while opperating the door handle, inside or out. The door locks and unlocks fine.  When opening the door from the outsied with the window rolled up
I wmust have the key inserted and turn it in an
unlocking motion while working the outside handle for it to open. I am pretty mechanical but I am not familiar with the mechanism and don't want to get too crazy with it unadvised.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

The latch is probably bad but you'll have to take it apart to see.  There is no special trick to this but replacement of the latch is a 1.5 to 2 hour job for an experienced tech, so be sure you are ready to follow through before you start.
