Land Rover Repair: Drive Shaft - Discovery SE 2001, grease fittings, drive shaft

Question
I've just been told that my drive shaft has to be replaced at a cost of $1000. The car only has 55,000 miles and is driven in a city. Can this be possible??????? Do I have any recourse? How can I tell if the whole shaft needs to be replaced versus the universal shafts? Do I have a right to see the parts?

Answer
Front drive shafts on Discovery II models do not have grease fittings, and they can fail suddenly.  If the shaft fails it can cause $5,000 in transmission damage.  If they say you need it, change it now.

I have published several advisories about this in my magazien columns
