Land Rover Repair: disco tranny conversion, interlake ave, org web address

Question
I have a 94 disco and the standard tranny went out. Can I convert to an automatic? If so where would I look for the conversion? If not do you know of a good but inexpensive rebuild place?

Follow-up:

Hi Jen,

my suggestion to you would be to contact some local LR clubs and ask some fellow onwer's.  These clubs are a valued resource for service and repairs.  For your area, you could check out the following clubs:

Cascade Rovers
Contact: Rob / Craig
E-Mail: admin@cascaderovers.org
Web Address: www.cascaderovers.org

Pacific Coast Rover Club
10537 Interlake Ave N.
Seattle, WA 98133
Contact: Gordon Perrott/Stefani Cushing
Phone: 206-361-5766
Fax: 206-361-7042 (Attn: PCRC)
E-mail: pcrc@pcrc.net (Attn: PCRC)
Web Address: www.pcrc.net

Ask them if they know someone local who could perform this work.  Most clubs have owner's who are willing to give advice and point you to trust-worthy shops.  You may even find a club owner who has done this conversion before.

Just a footnote:  My mechanic told me that the early Disco's were most often converted from manual to automatics when they first brought them over from the UK.  He spent many months doing this conversion to '94 and '95 models.  From him I learned that manual transmission Disco's are very rare here in N.America.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
