Land Rover Repair: RR P38 DSE -97 Autobox and hot start problem., air bubbles, autobox

Question
Hello!

My Range Rover (about 20.000km) revs up when changing from third to fourth gear (not when engageing lockup). All other gear shifts works fine. I have the ZF 4HP22 auto gearbox.
Since the oil wasn't all that clearly red, I've drained the oilsump and switched the oil filter and then added new fresh ATF oil. I know there is a lot of oil left in the system wich would need a complete flush but I thought I would give it a try. Nothing happend with the revs climbing while shifting to fourth gear. It's still the same.

My RR also has a problem starting when hot. I have to use the starter motor for about 10-15 seconds before the engine starts. It then leeves a little cloud of black smoke at the exhaust.
When cold there is no problem.

I can't see any air bubbles in the fuel line.
fuel filter is new.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Answer
Your transmission problem is probably an incipient failure within the clutches inside.  If we had the truck here we would pull the transmission and send it to ZF for overhaul.

With respect to the slow starting - I suggest you check for leaking fuel injectors based upon the black cloud you get on startup
