Land Rover Repair: interment oil light indicator and, oil sending unit, service folks

son's wife has 97 Landrover..oil indicator light
comes on after 10 minutes or so..then goes off,
then back on..my regular mechanic says could be
oil sending unit, or oil pump, or in any event
engine may need overhauling which is not an option..ll2,000 miles..good shape,maybe could
wholesale for 2,000.00, but if can get oil problem fixed at reasonable price, might fo that way...closest dealer 100 miles away, and service department says l00.00 hour shop charge..have
talked with lots of service folks and this guy
pr was the pits..

Hi WR,

more likely it's the oil pump or could be the pickup valve in sump.  Here is a simple suggestion that may help:

drain oil
remove oil pan and thoroughly clean the area with a solvent and lots of rags.
Make sure pickup valve is clean; you could carefully clean this with a tiny hose brush.
replace oil pan, filter and oil.

Check the serpentive belt to make sure it's not slipping on any of the pulleys.
