Land Rover Repair: Brake, ABS, TC and Hill Descent lights 03 Discovery, wheel sensors, land rover specialist

Question
Recently our Brake, TC, ABS and Hill Descent lights came on. LR service department informed us we needed new pads, discs, rotors...basically all the brakes done. OK we had our family mech do the job but no luck on the lights. Our LR is under warranty so we returned to the dealer who informed us the problem was that LR parts were not used hence they could do nothing about the problem. As a side note the breaks somtimes screech when braking..don't know if this has any relevance. I am taking it back to our mechanic in a few days but I not sure he has enough LR knowledge to resolve this. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
I'm afraid you may have wasted whatever you spent on your brake job.

First, the only way to read the fault codes from the ABS is with the specialist Land Rover test systems found at dealers or LR specialists.  So unless your independent shop has those tools he's only guessing.

You may be able to find an independent Land Rover specialist nearby, look on www.rangerovers.net

For the three lights to come on you probably have a problem with one of your wheel sensors.  Trouble is, a sensor fault can be caused by ultrasonic vibrations from the brake pads, and aftermarket pads are a cause of this - I have seen it myself.

So most dealers will say "fit genuine pads and rotors and then see if there's a problem."

As a result, the money spent on your aftermarket parts and their fitment is probably wasted.

If the fault remains with genuine parts, they will either change the sensor or the sensor and hub together.

But many times it does start with genuine pads and rotors.

In our shop we only use genuine pads for this reason.
