Land Rover Repair: Land Rover 99 Disc II ABS, TC, SERVICE ENGINE, DOWNHILL SYMBOL, lucas electrics, auto parts shop

Question
Hi John,

I bought this LR last year and for the last six months the ABS,
Traction light (looks like a gear??), Check engine soon, and
Downhill (with exclamation point next to it) light are all stuck
on. I live 4 1/2 hours from the nearest dealer. I am in a rural
town in Page Arizona and would have to drive to Phoenix or Las
Vegas to even have it checked. Is there anyway I can know that I
am not damaging the machine or turn the lights off? In other
words, I don't want to drive 9 hours (there and back) for many
reasons, not the least of which is that I don't know if it would
even make it that far and of course to save on gas (18 gallons to
travel there).  Your help would be immensely appreciated.

Thanks.

George

Answer
Hi George,

the ABS, TC and HDC lights are a common problem that has haunted Series II Land Rovers.  LR is not absolutely sure of the cause, perhaps there are too many faults that can trigger this problem.  Sometimes it's the ABS modulator, other times its sensor, electrical or even corroded connectors.  The lights are related but the cause is mercurial.  For most owners, the dealer is the only resource.  Make sure to voice your complaint to LRNA.

The CHECK ENGINE light may not be related to the '3 amigos' problem.  Go to your local auto parts shop and see if they'll read the OBDII code that generated this fault.

Start looking for a local mechanic that's willing to work on your Disco.  Usually, VW dealers are familiar with LUCAS electrics and BOSCH components.
