Land Rover Repair: Landrover Discover, selonoid, selenoid

Question
I have Landrover Discovery II - 2001.  I was told that the primary selenoid for the transfer case must be replaced.

Is this part really needed or can the car funciton without it? I was also told that the selonoid for the transfer case is not needed unless you need to switch from high to low.

Please advise.

Thanks

Answer
Actually, you don't "need" the transfer case solenoid.  The solenoid keeps your transfer case from being shifted when the ignition is off.  That's to prevent thieves from shifting your locked car into neutral ald rolling it away.

If you remove it you will no longer have that protection, but the function of the transfer case will be unaffected.

It's a part that was grafted on outside the case to meet anti theft legislation in several countries
