Land Rover Repair: Fuel Injection, fuel injection system, temperature gauge

Question
i have a 1994 V8i Landrover Discovery, Auto. 250000Km on the clock. Naturally I did not purchase this new, but at the end of 05. I have discovered the the water temperature sensor for the fuel injection system has been removed and an VDO Temperature Gauge sensor installed in its place. What is the function of the sensor and how does it affect the running of the engine.
Thanx Stephen

Answer
If the VDO sender works the same as the original sensor, and it's wired up, nothing will be different.

If the fuel injection does not have a temp sensor the car won't run right and the warning light will be on.  Is this happeneing?  In America a V8 would not be driveable with the temp sensor missing.

Perhaps you'r emistaken about which sensor is swapped . . .did they replace the gauge sensor instead?
