Land Rover Repair: Diesel?, diesel conversions, diesel models

I live in Washington state in the USA.  I have a 99 discover series 1 and it has a regular gas V8 engine 4.0 litre.  

I have seen that in Europe there are diesel models of discos.  Can I buy a diesel engine that fits my discovery and have it installed?

If so where can I fine more information?

Diesel conversions are available, with the most popular being the installation of Land Rover's 300TDI motor or the 2.8 Powerstroke motor used in some vehicles in South America.

Cost is $20k or more to have the job done, somewhat less that $10k to buy the pieces and do it yourself.
