Land Rover Repair: wont start, diesel pump, electrical harness

Question
hi john. i have a land rover tdi 1996 on a n plate. today when i was out i was sitting at lights when my 4x4 just cut out for no reason what so ever(just died) when a tried to restart it i turned the key and nothing. all my electrics work and dash board lights except the glow plug light does not show. please could you give me some clue to what it could be.when my partner had a look and he tried to turn the key you could here the diesel pump coming on but thats all.

Answer
1996 Discoveries are notorious for electrical harness and fuse board troubles.  The fuse board is below the steering column and it can corrode if the windshield leaks, allowing water to get in.

The cables at the battery corrode and the fuse links under the hood go bad also.  The grounds between engine and chassis and battery also corrode.

Finally, ignition switches are prone to fail.

I would wager your answer lies in one of those systems.
