Land Rover Repair: strange sound freelander 1999, electronic traction control, loose cables

Question
Hello John,

I own a freelander from 1999 with 62000 km.
Last month I notice a sound in the car wich shouldnt be there. Hard to describe but I give it a try...
Its like a very big musquito "buzzing". It looks like it come from the dashboard. Removed radio, checked for loose cables in dashboard. Checked blower engine ventilation etc.
When I start the car, no sound. When driving forward without steering, no sound. Driving slowly forward (first gear) and steer slowly to the right, the sound starts and stays, even when you drive straight. Switching off engine during drive you still can hear the noise.
Yesterday drove 120 km/h the sound suddenly came back and you feel fibrating near gearlever.
We checked the whole drivetrain and all bearings looks o.k. Removed front wheels and checked brakes, also o.k. (Brakes and rubber mounting driveshaft aft has been renewed last service)
Visco looks o.k. and bearings on both sides of visco are in line (90 degrees)
Running out of ideas. Maybe you hear or read about this problem before...
Thanks in advance and best regards,
Martijn, the Netherlands

Answer
Hi Martijn,

I've heard that the electronic traction control occasionally makes buzzing sounds.  You'll have to get LR to check that out.  This is a problem even for Rangies and some Disco's.

The only other possible buzzing I would imagine is caused by a ground fault or electronic short.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
