Question -
I have a 2002 diesel Freelander. In fifth gear the gear lever gives a rattling/vibration/tinkling sound and the gearlever shakes more than normal. Is there a problem?

The first thing I'd do is check to see if the gearshift linkage is about to fall apart.

That has already been done and it is in good shape.

AnswerIf you've already checked the linkage I don't know what else to say except, yes, you have a problem.
The problem could be something coming apart inside the gearbox, or even broken engine mounts. I suggest you have a specialist drive it and give his opinion.
