Land Rover Repair: brakes, metal shavings, flat head screw

Question
1999 Discovery II - Are there any tricks to replacing the rear rotors. The wheel is off, the flat head screw is out of the rotor, and still won't come off.

Hi Ray,

There are no tricks that I am aware of.  The flat head screw...do you mean the large nut that locks the rotor and bearing onto the axle wheel hub?

On my '95 Disco ( and I don't think its much different than your series II Disco), once you've bent back the washer and removed the large lock nut, it's just a matter of removing the rotor and bearing case.  Be careful not to drop anything.

Since the rotors are being changed, might as well repack the bearings.

Separating the rotor from the bearing case is not easy.  Make sure to prevent any dirt or metal shavings from entering the bearing area.  Cover it with a clean cloth while you struggle to separate the rotor.  Don't use heat.  Light taps with a hammer will have to do all around the rotor.  Eventually, it will separate.

Send me an email and I'll forward a diagram that might be able to show what I mean.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
