Land Rover Repair: Service Engine Light, advance auto parts, service reminder

Question
John,
I have a 1996 4.0 SE Range Rover. Mileage 108,000. The red service engine light is constantly on. There is no dealer in my area--but I'm told it has to go to a dealer and put on his computer to be turned off. Also told the light comes on in all 1996 Range Rovers around 100,000 miles as a service reminder. Any way to cut this light off without visiting the dealer?
Also the yellow ABS light has just come on-- stays on. Brakes seem to be fine. Does this indicate that I need a brake job.
Also installed new battery. Have a Clarion Diversity AMR 2672Radio, CD changer etc.  It will not accept the code. I have tried everything-- wait time-- ingition only on for 3 hrs. etc. Am told by both dealers and factory that I have the correct code. I have removed the radio and am preparing to ship it off for repair. (I just discovered your site.) Any thoughts on the radio code. Is there a chip or something that can be removed. Would love to just do away with the code thing.
Thank you for this web site.

Answer
Hi John,

nice Rangie.  Low mileage too! I prefer the 4.0SE over the MKIII anytime. It has a nicer look to it.

The reset on a Range Rover is usually done at the dealer only.  The testbook must be connected to reset this flag. I think you could try an OBDII reader...Advance Auto parts stores are kind enough to take a reading from your Rangie...maybe they can reset this for you.

John Monaghan of Roverville Radio Repair & Exchange is an expert on Clarion AMR 2672 radios for Range Rovers.  Perhaps you can send him an email (splacket@aol.com) and ask him if there is a work around for your radio.  I know that if you have trouble with the codes, sometime you have to wait 90 minutes before retrying.  John Monaghan should have more insight that I on this matter.  Good reputation and fast turnaround on most repairs.  He can replace your radio for about $425

The ABS light has always been a problem with Land Rovers and Range Rovers.  Some say wheel sensors are to fault, others have troubles with the ABS modulator.  One owner reported that his fault was caused by a misaligned right rear wheel speed sensor. Sensors can pop out of position over time.  When they are installed, it is important to push them all the way in - firmly seated.

Here is another useful site you should have:

It has solutions to many of the problems Rangie owners have faced over the years.

Best of luck,
