Recently my car starts to rumble since the transmission has a spontaneous issue with low pressure and starts to grumble and make the car difficult to accelerate. In addition, while the car is experiencing transmission problems it has an overdrive off light that comes on flashing codes. This was hooked up to a computer and read as the code for electronic pressure control mal function. I had a transmission mechanic replace the electronic pressure control solenoid along with the internal wire harness for the transmission since he had experience with Ford transmissions and their wire harnesses falling apart. The car drove fine on the free for a 38 mile distance and did not act up. Around 12 the hottest point of the day it began to act up again immediately after being moved out of a parking space. At first it stalled out. When the driver turned the ignition back on she recieved the same error code and grumbling and was forced to push her car back into a parking space. Are there other solenoids that could be associated with the same code of 624??

Hi Ashley,

What is the year and model? And, is that a P0624 code?

It's a 1995 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC series.. I was recently told by a mechanic the problem isn't my transmission but my engine is running poorly as if only 3 cylinders are working whent he problem arises and that is why I am not getting enough compression. I was told the error code for the transmission is reading might be because the problem arises in the ECM. Does this sound about right? The problem is inconsistant. I made sure to check all fuses and inspect for vaccuum leaks but cannot find a problem there.

Well, no... Kinda ok, yeah maybe! How's that? hehehehe If the overdrive is flashing, it's transmission. It just flashes, it doesn't send codes in a hidden morse code or anything. It means it's in failsafe and that is second and reverse only. The reason it feels like it's gutless is because your trying to do 65 in second. I need to know what codes are stored before you do any work with your mechanic. This transmission is a 4R70W and is fully electronic. When it sees a bad sensor or a solenoid not responding as expected, it will go into this mode to protect itself from total melt down. There are lots of sensors that will cause this. TPS, MLPS, 4 different shift solenoids, EPC solenoid, input and/or output speed sensors. Not to mention an actual internal transmission failure. I suggest you take your car to a transmission shop for a diagnostic service. Cottman Transmissions will do this for free. Make sure to get the code numbers and resubmit those to me and I will tell you what is what. Hope this helps. Low compression in todays engines is near impossible. Your engine also has a rev limiter. As you wind it out to max RPM you will feel it cut off and on. This is protecting the engine. There is no better engine on the market today than Lincoln. The transmissions need some help, but the engines are bullet proof.

So here's the deal.. took to a tranny guy who read the code with a machine and says its code 624 for Electronic Pressure Control failure so we replaced the solenoid and wire harness. We disconected the battery to reset it and drove down the road for a 45 min drive. Next day it barely moves out of a parking space and it stalls out.. turn the key and start her up again and got the same code and rumble.. the rumble is in every moving gear so 1st 2nd driver and reverse but not park.. when you're in park and rev up the engine the engine is gutless like its only working off half the cylinders. The code eventually stops and the rumble goes away but it's not consistant as to when it acts up. So are you telling me that I might be stuck between gears due to possibly a tranmission shift solenoid and because Im stuck in gears the engine sounds gutless but really its the transmission thats the problem??

Answer
Not stuck between gears. When the OD light is on, you are in fail safe. 2nd and reverse only as I explained before. Here is the definition and diagnosing of the 624 code:

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 624 indicate a failure of EPC circuit.

DTC 625 indicates an opening in the driver circuit.

Possible causes:

Open or short in harnesses (internal/external).
Solenoid damaged electrically.
Key "OFF".
Disconnect transmission vehicle harness connector.
Key "ON", engine "OFF".
Measure the voltage between VPWR, EPC PWR circuit at transmission vehicle harness connector and chassis/battery ground.
Is voltage greater than 10.5 volts?
Yes --  Go to TC11. See: TC11 - Check Continuity of Solenoid Signal and VPWR Harness
No --  Service open in harness. Reconnect all components. Rerun quick test. See: Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes\Quick Test Appendix (Detailed Testing Instructions)
