Question Hi John, I have a 1989 323 2dr hatchback Mazda 1.6L and would like to know if the fuel pump motor isn't working because I don't hear that humming sound, which my cousin told me it was the pump, when I turn the key on. My car has a very rough and slow idle like gas is not going through but when I accelerate it a little it idles better yet misfires/backfires under the hood area. I don't know if my explanation here make's sense but it feels/seems like the car is running on fumes, which is what I smell.(NO FUEL SMELL INSIDE OF THE CAR) Is there any electrical wires that could be the cause of the pump not working right that needs to checked? If so where would it be located? I don,t let it idle more than 10-15 seconds because I'm afraid something might happen.
A friend of mine helped me change the spark plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve about a month ago and he said that the gas wasnt going through. I told him about the humming sound of the fuel pump but he ignored me. Oh well. My car, which I like a lot, still sits in my garage unable to move. I was told to get an engine compression and fuel operations test done but my fund's are very limited. If there is anything we could do ourselves, I'd like for us to do it first. I do have a 2003 MPV which is more for family use. I would really appreciate all the HELP you can give me.

AnswerWell, the fuel pump motor can be tested by locating the fuel pump relay "use a repair manual" and jumping the pump leads to see if it produces noise. You can then allow it to run for a minute or so and shut it of. Then, with safety glasses on and a rag handy, use a screwdriver to depress the center of the Schrader valve "looks like a tire valve on the fuel rail" and see if you get a good sized squirt of fuel out of it. Hold the rag about this valve when you do it to catch most of the fuel. If you only get a trickle, but you could hear the pump humming, try replacing the fuel filter. If you got a big squirt, you may need a new fuel pressure regulator or you may need a new air flow meter. The air flow meter is my guess as this car uses a Vane Air Meter that is prone to failure after years of service. Symptoms are the car has a low rough Idle with slight improvement off idle and the complete inability to drive it due to a lack of fuel supply by the injectors. It will buck thrash and jump all over hell.
Try a new airflow meter or a used one if possible.
There are two varieties, one for the Turbo Model and One for the Non turbo.
