Military Vehicle Repair: chevy 1008 parts, buss bar, starter solenoid

Question
where can i find a new glow plug "card"?  will ordinary 12 volt alternators fit/work? my large originals were missing when purchased from g.l.  possibly need source for large resister on firewall since mine appears to have "smoked".  we tried running with a single 24 V alternator on passenger side and manual activation of glo plugs.  don't recommend it. This is a 1985 chevy 1008 with 50,000 mi.

Answer
Hello Rex,
First for the resistor.....you can just forget it, and run a little jumper wire from the 12 volt diamond shaped power tap on the firewall, to the glow plug relay battery side.
use a wire about the same guage as the red wire feeding that diamond from between the batteries.

On to the alternators.
The orriginal alternators are just Delco 12 volt, 100 amp alternators, although with an isolated ground. The one on the drivers side, connect the ground stud to the engine block....just like any other 12 volt alternator. it will actually be charging the front battery.
Now...the other alternator...exactly the same alternator, but the ground stud connects to a 12 volt wire there, not the block. And the pos stud connects to a 24 volt wire, which actually comes from that buss bar with all the 3/8 studs, right behind the rear battery. That alternator just charges that second battery.
Very simple system actually.

Glow plug card you will need to go to memphisequipment.com.
They have a wide variety of parts and equipment for military stuff.

The ONLY actual 24 volt item on the truck is the starter and solenoid. Everything else is stock 12 volt Chevy parts, except that glow plug controller, and the relays under the dash, one of which is a 12 volt relay, but controlls 24 volt to the starter solenoid.

I am running 6 of those trucks in my fleet.
