Mitsubishi Repair: auto repair, power transistor, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
I've been having a problem with my mitsubishi eclipse coupe turbo ignition coils.  I've replace 5 of them in the past three months.  Each time i replace one the other side blows.  Lately they only last a week and after driving any distance that requires a half an hour drive my coil burns out the side and i start losing power.  Any suggestions on what it could be or where i can start looking for a solution.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Joe,
This could be caused by a problem with the power transistor unit.  The Power Transistor Unit (PTU) is responsible for supplying then removing current to each of the ignition coil primary circuits.  Its timing is regulated by your car's computer (ECU).  Off hand, I do not know the specs for your particular power transistor.  For other Mitsubishis I've tested, the unit should be seeing around 4-5 volts when current is flowing, and around 0.5 volts when it is switched off.  Check that for start if you haven't already.
Good luck!
