Mitsubishi Repair: 2001 Mitsubishi Galant Timing Belt Replacement, mitsubishi galant, timing belt replacement

Question
After changing battery, tried for several days to start my 2001 Mitsubishi Galant. Found out my timing belt broke and that my engine was probably damaged by attempting to start car.

My question:
#1: A friend who is a mechanic told me that the belt & engine has to be replaced in a shop usuing certain equipment to align the timeing belt.

#2 Another friend, who's also a mechanic told me he can replace the engine and timing belt himself for me and that it can be done withoug being in a shop w/certain equipment. There's markings that show how to align the belt.

Is #2 correct?  I'm a single parent and need my car to get back & forth to work.  I can't afford to fix it twice.  Pls help!

Thanking you in advance.

Answer
Linda: I would go with friend number two, there are marks for putting the timing belt back on, as long as you never got the engine started with trying to start it; I believe the engine will be ok. The number one friend is trying to get more money out of you. A lot of people believe women don't know much about cars and will try to pull the wool over your eyes. If number two friend is a mechanic, has a repair manual for your car and then those marks. All should go fine. I guess you could also if you like check the cost between one and two, see who gives you a better cost to do the job. I mean if number one gives you a great cost under number two than go with him but I don't know of any certain equipment as to align the timing belt other than a good repair manual and those marks. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda
