Mitsubishi Repair: 1991 Galant LS 2.0 Liter: Interference Engine?, 4g63 engines, interference engines

Question
I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Galant LS 2.0 Auto SOHC that the Timing Belt snapped on.  The Engine is listed as a 4G63 but I can't seem to find trustworthy information on whether the engine is Interference or Non-Interference.  If it is Interference will it be just Valves needing replaced or Head as well?

Answer
John,
The 4G63 engines are interference engines (whether it's a SOHC or DOHC).  There is a slightly less chance of bent valves because there are only 2 valves per cylinder. But if your RPMs were above idle, there's a good chance of bent valves.  You can do a compression test and sometimes that can tell you where have bent valves.  Most likely, you'll want to pull the head and replace all valves and any other damaged components.  If you were driving and your belt broke, that may have also damaged your piston heads too.
Good luck!
