Mitsubishi Repair: check engine light, auto parts stores, major auto

My 2003 Outlander check engine light just came
on.  What would cause this.  Thanks for your great information you have supplied me in the past.

If the light is on, but the car seems to be running fine, your problem is most likely with an emissions component.  Sometimes, this could be as simple as your gas cap being on too loose.  You can also go to an AutoZone (if there is one in your area) and they will read your engine codes for free when you ask.  Other major auto parts stores provide this free service.  Just go in and ask.
