Mitsubishi Repair: BLACK SMOKE..., mitsubishi eclipse gs, air flow sensor

Question
1997 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE GS-T 5spd
JUST BOUGHT THE CAR AND INSTALLED A NEW 16G BECAUSE THE STOCK 14B WAS REMOVED BECAUSE THE OWNER BEFORE ME SAID THE TURBO LOCKED UP ON, CAR SAT FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS. ANYWAY I GOT IT RUNNING AND IT POURS BLACK SMOKE OUT THE TAIL END. RUNS WAY TO RICH AND IS FOULING THE PLUGS. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. AND IS PULLING THE AIR FLOW SENSOR BUT REPLACED THAT AND IS STILL PULLING THE SAME CODE. TOOK IT FOR A DRIVE THE FIRST TIME AND WITH IN 5 MINUTES THE CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE. HAD IT UP INTO 3RD GEAR WHILE PUKING BLACK GREY SMOKE THE WHOLE TIME. I CLEARED THE CODES AND CAME OUT OF LIMP MODE. COULD THIS BE A BAD ENGINE COMPUTER OR POOR SPARK OR WHAT? THERE IS NO TOP END OR BOTTOM END NOISE. IDLES A LITTLE ROUGH AND AFTER IDLING FOR A PERIOD OF TIME WILL EVENTUALLY QUIT.(PROBABLY FROM PLUGS FOULING)

Answer
Josh: I hate to say this but I think you got engine problems, if the car is pouring black smoke out of the exhaust and does not have much power. It sounds like to me, bad rings. Does the car heat or use water, if so that could be a  weak or bad head gasket. As you do talk about black, "grey" smoke. You could have the car coded to rule out any problem with the computer or sensors. But if the turbo locked up on the car and then it sat for about 7 months. With it running to rich, I would be checking the computer and the sensors that control this. But after all this, if the car still runs poorly and is kicking out all that smoke. So using oil, then it would sound like a ring job is needed to fix the car. This is things from my repair manual that says to check... could be a vacuum leak in around the throttle body. Leaking EGR valve, and also the timing belt could be weak. But then the last line is either a weak or bad head gasket or the oil is getting passed the rings. You could do a compression test on the engine to see that that tell you. That would show if the rings are good or not. I wish I had better news for you. Linda
