Mitsubishi Repair: Turbo noise after engine shuts off, clutch fluid, clutch cylinder

Question
97 Eclipse GST-I recently had my clutch replaced in my Eclipse. Right after getting the car back, I start to hear a slight clanking sound from the engine bay after shutting the car off (sound goes on for about 4 seconds after shutting the car off). I investigate and it seems to be coming from the turbo (used a stethoscope). Anyways I asked the guys who did my clutch what happened and they said that they didn't touch the turbo. The car has 70,000 miles on it. Oh and by the way the racing clutch that was put in started slipping in two days. The mechanics said that it was because the clutch was cheaply made but I was skeptical. Immediately after I left this shop (after the clutch was replaced), the pedal pressure was really, really easy (but not smooth)and with a racing clutch I'm told the pressure in the pedal should be harder than stock especially after first being put in. If you can help, I would appreciate it big time.

Answer
Victor,
The turbo is never touched during a typical clutch replacement, and I doubt your problem is turbo related.  The small moving parts in a turbo would usually make a high pitch scratching or pinging noise; not a clanking.

With a racing clutch, the clutch pressure should be very stiff.  It's a good possibility the folks that replaced your clutch either did not bleed the clutch lines very well, and/or damaged the master clutch cylinder.  When any clutch moves in with little pressure, that usually indicates air in the clutch lines.  Check your clutch fluid levels as well.  For your shop to blame the problem on a cheaply made clutch, you're right to be skeptical.  Most average mechanics curse the thought of installing a clutch on an Eclipse because it can be quite difficult if they don't have much experience with that car.

I'd take the car back to them and have them at least check the master clutch cylinder and have them bleed the clutch lines again.  Also ask them to check the transmission fluid level.  If the tranny fluid is low or they topped it off with a non-recommended fluid type, that can also cause problems.
Good luck!
