Motorcycle Repair: 1986 honda shadow 750c, vt700, honda shadow

Question
Hi i have a honda shadow VT750C .... i was looking to find a number for the oil filter, i received one from my honda dealer but it was much larger then the filter i took off the bike. I was wondering if you had any idea's as to why ? and why is it so hard to find information on this particular bike???

Answer
Hi Michelle,

I believe your bike uses this filter originally:
Honda Oil Filter VT750C 15400-PFB-004
Try your Honda car dealer also.

Your filter has a 20 x 1.5 mm thread
and has a bypass valve of 10-18 psi.

These various brand filters fit that description also:
Fram PH6607 and Fram PH6017A
Purolator PL14459
Mobil-1 M1-104
Supertech ST3593a

The important part is if the gasket fits
your engine and if the filter will fit
in the space provided.

Compare your old filter gasket surface
to the new one. If it looks the same
and the filter will spin on easily
but tightly then it is okay.

The size of the filter
is only important as to fitting.
The filter is full of oil when running and
is under pressure so the filter
being larger will not have any effect once
the oil pressure has built up.

Lube the filter gasket with oil
before you install it.

It doesn't hurt to pour a little oil
inside the filter unless it will
just run out and make a mess.

If the gasket is the correct size and the filter fits
in the space provided then it will work fine.
Check for leaks after too. Hand tighten only.

These bikes were only made for a few years and
are basically identical to the VT700 in the
states except a slightly larger engine.
Any info for the VT700 will be helpful to you.

Since it was made for Canada and Europe there
may be less information around.
Also it is about 25 years old so some info may
be hard to find.

bikebandit.com has lots of bike parts and
also cmsnl.com Look for Vt700 or vt750.

Good luck!
