Motorcycle Repair: 84 suzuki gs250fw ignition, coil resistance, wire colors

Question
g'day,
I have a gs250fw which has been sitting for about 5yrs, no history given with bike unfortunately, motor cranks ok but no sparks. This bike has twin pickup coils & twin coils firing 4 cylds. Checked pickup resistance - good, coil resistance down to 21 & 25 k ohms, book says 30 - 60 k ohms. have checked ignition and kill switches, tried the only test for the igniter from the book with no luck. looks like the igniter is dead.
what I would like to know is can I use an igniter from another suzuki, I can find several which are nearly the same (mine bb1212, have found bb1214, bb1208, bb1213, bb1205) which have similar connections but different plugs, when checking wiring diagrams they look like they have all the same connections just in different configurations.
I hope you may be able to advise on this as no one else can.
   thanks , in advance, Dave.

Answer
Hi Dave,

It is hard to find parts for these older bikes but
sometimes you can try to use what is out there.

Make sure your igniter has power to it from
the ignition switch orange/white wire I believe.
Igniter should have a good ground as well.
Corrosion is a big problem with older wires.
Sometimes the solder joints can be reflowed
to repair these igniters if that is possible.

The mechanical advance analogue electronic ignitions were phased out
and replaced with full electronic or digital ignitions in the late
eighties. The later type did away with the mechanical advance
and incorporated an electronic ignition advance.
The later ignitions for the most part use one pickup or signal generator
while earlier ones have two pickups.

The type you need is the two pickup style igniter.
Where do you find one? Well, the original unit of course
and possibly any other 4 cylinder Suzuki (preferably)
that uses two pickup coils. These will be pre 1987
models like the GS750E or GSX750F.
Find a wrecked one and you might even use the pickups as well
as the igniter. The wire colors are even identical
so it might be the only hope for such a rare part.

Another option might be having the unit repaired if possible.
Ask these guys, they build igniters for the 750:

Most two pickup igniters could probably be adapted
but it is hard to judge how efficient they would perform.
There are small differences in ignition timing curves
although this is less on older analogue systems like yours.

Cheers, Mate ;)
