Motorcycle Repair: starter, starter button, flt

QUESTION: 1989 FLT starter button makes starter click but wont engage but can jump across and starts fine output on relay to starter for engagement is only 5 volts but relay is good tried 5 different ones to be sure other positives on relay are both 12 volts -suggestions-

ANSWER: Is the ground wire on the relay good?

I would clean the ground wire and make sure its tight. Since you have 12 volts to the relay and only 5 volts out, check the pins on the connection and make sure they are not corroded. If they look even slightly bad, then replace the plug.
