Motorcycle Repair: 2001 Sportster Not charging, ac volts, stator

Question
QUESTION: Can you tell me what the most likely problem would be. I just bought a new battery thinking that it might be the problem with it being the original battery. I did have a oil leak in the front head and it dripped oil on the regulator. do you think maybe it got hot and burnt up? or should I look somewhere else. it has 7300 miles on it.

ANSWER: What you need to to is first, check at the battery with a volt meter when the bike is running and see what the voltage is. You should be getting around 13.5 volts at 2000 RPM. If not then test your stator for OHMs and AC output. If it doesnt pass then the stator is bad, if it does then the regulator is bad

QUESTION: Thank for the input. Can you tell me how to check the stator? And where it is located Where the wires would be ECT. I do work on cars, so I know I can do this just need to know a little bit of what I am Doing. Thanks

Answer
The stator is located inside the primary. Follow the wires from the regulator and you will see a plugin for the stator. unplug is that test the leads of the stator for OHMs. Should be no OHMS. If there is its grounded. Start the bike and test for AC volts. At 2000 RPM it should put out around 50 volts
If you are planning on doing the repair yourself, I would suggest getting a service manual. In it you will find how to remove it and install the new one
Good luck and happy riding
