Motorcycle Repair: oil on electronic ignition, 1980 honda cb750, oil level

Question
Hi Jerry, I have a 1980 honda cb750 DOHC, trying to fix up. Folowing Clymer manual checked ignition timing. When I pulled the cover oil leaked out. The contacts were oily. Is this normal.

Thanks in advance.
David

Answer
NO The seal behind the points plate is bad. Check your manual on how to remove the plate and check the seal. you will see oil coming from the bottom of the seal. The rubber will get hard from the heat of the engine and the seal will leak.

Also check the oil level it has to be at the mark not over filled. You will also have to replace the points and condensers to make sure every thing will work right.Clean EVERY THING with spray brake cleaner this will leave no residue. Clean the new points with this also before you install them. Make sure you get the contacts really clean

Any problems get back to me.
