Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Honda gl1200L, mail tag, cap tank

My bike has about 25k mis. on it . Last fall it cut out on me during a road trip, it would not start at first but started after about 15 or 20 mins. The only indication that I got was that the fuel system came on the dash. Yhis happened 1 more time on this trip ,with the same scenario.It didn't happen again until the second day we were back home( in heavy traffic ). I only rode the bike after that around my neighborhood to try to get it to fail so I could try to trouble shoot the problem but it wouldn' fail.  So I went home shut it down and got a bite and a beer by that time it cooled down I tried to ride it again but it would not start. So the first thing i did was pull a plug to check the fire,  it wasnt firing on any cylinder I checked my clymers book but it did not give me any clues .After checking the book I tried to start it and it started right up. This intermiientproblem ha got me miffed. If youcould help me I would appreciate it.    Nick
