Motorcycle Repair: Head Gasket repair for 1987 Kawasaki Ninja 750, head gasket repair, kawasaki ninja

Question
I recently picked up a ninja 750 free of charge, knowing that it has a bad head gasket. I was going to take it in and get it fixed but I would like to do it myself. What seals, and gaskets do I need to change... What are the steps? Who do you recommend for parts?

Answer
Nick,

these engines are not simple to repair,
a shop manual is a necessity and will tell
you the precise steps to tear the engine
down without doing any expensive damage.

-The head gaskets are priced close to
$200.00 each. You should check the cam
chain and tensioners when apart and replace
any o-rings or valve seals it may have.

-There is a gasket on the top cover as well.
This engine has two overhead camshafts that
should be inspected and need to be timed
carefully on reassembly to prevent
bending the valves.

-the valves should be checked for leakage
while it's apart.

-The head surface should be checked for warpage also.

-on reassembly you will need a torque wrench.

-the steps are too numerous to list here
as you will have to remove anything in
the way, including carbs, wiring, coils,
gas tank, fairings and exhaust system.

-check with Kawasaki for parts or with
online parts suppliers like bikebandit.com,
cmsnl.com or possibly eBay.
