Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki Ninja 650R no engine oil, 2007 kawasaki ninja, oil gauge

Question
Hello Mike,

Thank you for taking my question.  I just bought a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 650R.  The shop prepped the bike and told me that the engine oil was full.  When I got the bike home (using U-Haul) and test rode it a couple of days later, I realized that the engine oil lighted up (especially when I was shifting gears but not when I opened the throttle).  I stopped the bike and checked the engine oil gauge and it appears as if there is no oil in the engine.  I rode for about 3 miles at low speeds.  I believe that the motorcycle dealership did not put in engine oil by mistake.  What sort of damage is done to the bike and if I have any recourse?

Your advise is greatly appreciated.  (I am a new rider, no knowledge whatsoever).

Best, Kyle

Answer
No oil in the oil tank could have damaged the motor, its hard to tell only going 3 miles, but ther long term damage could be there. I would first contact the dealership and tell them the problem and see what they say and go from there. If they are a dealership that wants to have customers come back they will take the bike back and check the motor over and see if any problems exist.
Happy riding
Mike
