Motorcycle Repair: cb500 blowing fuse, fuse holders, fuse holder

Question
Just purchased a1973 cb500 .8000 mile above average condition starts and runs great ,After about 15 min. of riding it blows a fuse and dies.change fuse and good to go again.Where do i start?

Answer
Hi,

-bad wire or loose connections are the usual problem.

The fuse holders are a place to start,
they get corroded and sometimes create
alot of resistance which blows fuses.
Clean them well or replace with a blade
type fuse holder.
-pull any big connectors you can
find and inspect them as well.
-clean the frame or engine ground
wires. Remove the bolts and sand the metal.
-clean and tighten the battery cables.

After all this start looking for any
places wires may have rubbed through
to the frame and may be touching intermittantly.
Try a fuse with a slightly higher amp rating
and see if it still blows. With the
wiring harness getting older it may work.
Don't run without a real fuse or you may fry
enerything. You know what I mean, like wrapping
gum foil around the fuse like MacGyver. ;)
