Motorcycle Repair: high RPMs, lean mixture, adjustment screw

Question
Hi,
I bought a 82 Virago 750 last year and I have been trying to get it to run smoothly.
I had the Carbs rebuilt and replaced one of the floats.  I changed the spark plugs and the gas and the oil/filter.
One cylinder is running rich and the other is running lean.
I was told that there is one screw that adjusts the Rich/Lean mixture for both carbs at the same time.  (turn the screw one way and the front carb gets leans and the rear gets rich, and vise versa.)  Is this true? If not then where are these screw to adjust the mixture and sync the carbs? Will I have to keep taking the carbs and tank off every time I want to make an adjustment?
Will this stop the RPMs from racing to 5 and 6 Thousand when I try to give it just a little gas?  I got the bike to idle at 12K RPMs but when I tap the throttle it revs up to 5 and 6K.
Thanks
Gronk

Answer
Hi Gronk.

There is a mixture screw in each of the carbs; they are set at the factory and you should never ever mess with them.  If the mixture has been changed then you should take the bike to a shop to get it fixed properly.

Mixture will have no bearing on synchro and the idle speed should be between 950 - 1050rpm, so do the synch as soon as you can get the idle down.  There is an idle speed adjustment screw and you should lower the idle with that.

Check to be sure that the needle valves in each carb are set identically in each carb.  Check it against the specs in the repair manual and correct the one that is wrong.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
