Motorcycle Repair: Bike quite Running, jumper wire, key switch

Question
1996 Harley FXDWG, driving on freeway at 70 mph, bike instantly stopped running. Pulled over and it cranks no problem but does not start. Pulled plug and grounded plug, and cranked, has no spark. No recent work or modification. Any idea what the problem could be?   Thanks   Ron

Answer
There are several things that can cause your problem. First you are going to need a test light to find the trouble. I would suspect that you have a short in the ignition.
Start by turning the ignition on and test at the coil. You should have 12 volts at the hot post(the one from the switch). If not then you have to trace back to the breaker and then the the key switch to see where the problem is. You can also run a jumper wire from the battery to the hot post of the coil and turn the bike over. If you have spark then you have a wiring problem.
If you do have 12 volts, then you need to test the coil and plug wires. If they are ok then you ignition is probably bad.
Good luck and happy riding
