Motorcycle Repair: spark, kawasaki prairie, exciter coil

Question
Hey Mark,
This is Ken . Email address dkze@cebridge.net . I've got a Kawasaki prairie 250 three wheeler 1985 . I can't get a spark . Good battery . New spark plug . I can put 12 volts on the coil and make and break the negative wire and get a spark that way , so I figure the coil is good . I bought a used cdi box that was "supposed" to be good . All thats left is the excitor coil inside the engine . I took it out and it looks fine . It feels like a magnet and the two wires coming out of it have some resistance between them . I don't see how that could be bad .
Is there any test I could do to determine if the excitor coil is bad or the cdi I bought is bad ?
The cdi does have 12 volts going to it and a good ground .
Any suggestions would be appreciated . Thanks .

Answer
Hi Ken,

Check the exciter coil for continuity and resistance. The exact ohm values are in the service manual, which I do not have.

If the permanent magnet (altenator rotor) is struck or dropped on a hard surface, it may become demagnatized and useless.

Visit "www.atvfrontier.com" and ask if anyone has a service manual or specs.

I'll send electrical test tech files to your eamil address. They may help you with diagnosis.

Visit "www.electrosport.com" and follow their "Fault Finding Chart"
