Motorcycle Repair: elect start problem, starter solenoid, motor brushes

Question
I have a 99-2000 Yamaha Kodiak and recently the electric start is having a problem. Basically when you press the start button the main fuse will buzz... nothing else happens.
This started slowly - buzz a little and then it would start, but now it will only buzz.
I can manually start the ATV.
Does this sound like a starter problem? electric?

Thanks for any feedback.
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

The buzzing indicates one or more of the following:

Weak or defective battery
Worn starter motor brushes
Worn or defective starter solenoid
Loose or corroded battery cable
Defective or corroded starter button contacts
Water shorting

You'll have to investigate or have someone investigate each one until the problem is located.
