Motorcycle Repair: honda crf250x and honda clone carb. questions, honda crf250x, air fuel mixture

Question
my first question is- i just recently bought 2 110cc honda clone dirtbikes from a distributing warehouse for my kids x-mas, the problem is one of the bikes runs perfect, the other on is harder to start and will not maintain a idle unless i turn the idle screw in almost all the way, i have tried making minor adjustments to the air/fuel screw but it doesnt help, the throttle itself has the correct freeplay, i am very mechanicaly inclined but this problem has me stuck, all i can think it may be is the throttle is bad or internaly broken.
my second questions is i just bought a 2005 crf250x and havent even had time to ride it yet but have heard that they come from the factory adjusted lean at the carb. for epa standards, should i do any adjustments or jet changing to the bike to keep it from running lean? i live in Louisiana and will be using the bike mainly for trail riding. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, justin

Answer
Hi Justin,

I'm receiving many complaints about these imported "clone" motorcycles.

I suspect the problem may be a varnished carburetor and/or fouled spark plug. You'll have to investigate to verify.

Reference the 250, why not ride it and see how it performs before messing with the carb? Learn to read the spark plug and tune the carb accordingly, if necessary.

New engines may be slightly lean to accomodate EPA's Clean Air Act standards. I doubt you'd even notice. If it posed a problem, wouldn't dealerships be overwhelmed with customers returning their new $5,000 dirtbikes for repairs? Of Course they would. Don't believe everything you hear.

Engines produce optimum power when the air-fuel mixture is a bit lean.
