Motorcycle Repair: Honda CB500 1999 Starting problem, honda cb500, starter solenoid

Question
Hi, I am having problems starting my 1999 Honda CB500. When I press the starter switch I just hear a click. I have just bought a new battery and starter relay, but still no go! I have removed the starter motor and checked that it runs, it runs fine when connected to the battery. When all the leads are connected to the battery I cannot run my headlights & indicators at the same time. Is there a solonoid? Where is it? Any suggestions on my next step would be much appreciated. thanks. Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

First, get a copy of the service/repair manual. The manual has illustrated test, troubleshooting, and repair procedures. The manual will pay for itself with the first repair you perform.

The usual cause of the problem described is a weak or defective battery. Even new batteries may be defective or not properly serviced prior to installation.

Check battery voltage with a multimeter (VOM). Check individual battery cell specific gravity with a hydrometer designed for motorcycle batteries. Charge or replace the battery accordingly.

Check battery cable ends for clean, tight connections.

Another common cause for the problem is worn starter motor brushes. Remove the starter motor, disassemble, and inspect the length of the carbon brushes. Replace brushes if necessary and clean starter motor prior to reassembly.

The Positive + battery lead connects directly to the starter solenoid. Test the solenoid by disconnecting all leads and apply 12VDC to the primary windings. The solenoid should "click" if working properly. Refer to the service manual for additional testing procedures using test meter.

Check starter button contacts for corrosion or other non-conductors such as webs or dead insects between the contacts (believe it or not). Clean the contacts to a shiny surface.
