Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Honda Goldwing Interstate, vintage japanese motorcycle, goldwing interstate

Question
We have lost the key to our motorcycle. We were told to pull the ignition out and get the code off of it, to get a new key made. We do not know how to get it out without ruining it. Could you give us some advice on how to do this?
                           Thank-you

Answer
Hi Jim,

The ignition switch is fastened by two bolts from the underside of the switch.

It may be necessary to remove the fairing to access these bolts.

Here's a couple of links you can use to trace down a replacement for that lost key. Sometimes you can get the number off the ignition switch and get the dealer to reproduce the key. Sometimes they do not have the key blanks or the code so you might want to check out the below links. Good luck!

First, you Honda guys might want to try Mark Troxell. I hear he sells old Honda keys. I don't have an email address for him, but here is his address and phone number:

Mark Troxell
56 S 4th Street
Emmaus PA 18049

(610) 967-3526

This fellow has some old Honda keys. If you know your key number, e-mail him at: jmlarsen@worldnet.att.net
I don't know his name, but I heard he charges about $6 per key.

Joe Maida from the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Forum had this suggestion on old keys. He suggests you try northeast vintage cycle for the key.

Once there, click on the mini-trail that comes up to enter the site, and then click on the "NEW" banner on the left. You have to send them your key number and wait for a reply, or call them. If the link above does not show, visit www.vjmc.org  Click on the “LINKS” banner on the left, and then the "$" sign. Scroll down the listing of websites until you find the one with NEVC in the tail end of the address.

Stu Oltman of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Forum says, "I also understand that the 70's style keys with a "T" followed by 4 digits are not supplied by Honda anymore. If you're not too concerned about the Honda logo on the key, you can have the key made at a locksmith's shop. The key blank is Taylor brand and the number is H76.”
