Motorcycle Repair: Yahama ATV 2003 Warrior 4 whler, oil change service, car oils

Question
I have just changed my oil and filter on my ATV and now the lifters sound like they are knocking - any advise please!

Answer
Ryan, I had to go online at http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/ to see what you own. I don't specialize in Yamahas and/or ATVs, but I found that there is an oil filter element on the side of the motor and a screen on the bottom of the crankcase. Not exactly sure which one you disturbed/changed. Looks pretty straightforward from the illustrations, unless you put the spring in before the screen on the bottom.

The engine doesn't have "lifters" as it is an OHC using rocker arms riding on the camshaft. Make sure you put the filters in correctly, then check the oil level and then the oil circulation by taking a rocker arm cover off and starting the engine... put a rag over the hole! If you have oil flying around, then the system is pumping as it should.

Seems to have an automatic camchain tensioner, so other than a rocker arm adjustment, I don't know why you are suddenly getting more noise from the motor after the oil change service. Some oils work better than others inside, especially if you change grades, but they shouldn't make a dramatic difference in the viscosity protecting the parts.
Just be sure you are using motorcycle oils, not car oils.
