Motorcycle Repair: What to check for when starting a bike that has been seating for a long time ?, kawasaki 750 zephyr, gas tank

Question
I have a 1991 Kawasaki 750 Zephyr that has been seating for years and the battery works fine but it will not start. It will turn over but it will not start. What can I check or do to even get an idea of what the problem is?

Answer
Hi Justin,

Gasoline left in the carburetors may have varnished (gummed)over time and may be preventing carburetors from working properly. Jets and passageways inside carbs becomes obstructed and fuel doesn't flow through them when varnishing occurs. Check gas tank for rust and the odor of varnishing. Remove and inspect float bowls. Shouldn't have any sediment, gumming, or crystalization.

Also, check for insect, rodent, and bird nests in airbox and other areas. Rodents chew on electrical wiring, too.
