BMW: bmw 328i 1995, bmw 328i, orange light

i have problem where after about 30 mins of driving an orange light comes on, in shape of a gear cog, and the transmission will not change up ur down as it is i think in safe mode

any ideas, hope it is a simple fix!!!!

 Unfortunately these cars are not my specialty, and I dont think I have any knowledge about their systems (I work on the older ones).

 I would check out:

 look under the E36 3-series section and post this question there.
