Motorcycle Repair: Engine sound, vance hines pipes, engine longevity

Question
Dear Mark,
I own a 2004 Yamaha V-Star 650 Classic and was wondering if and how i could take the baffles out of my bike. I would like to see if you suggest this or see if you think it's a bad idea. If it is bad idea what other suggestions do you have for a louder sound from the bike. The bike is only a couple months old and has about 2,500 miles on it.

Answer
Hi Rob,

Removing the baffles is not a wise idea. In fact, you will detune engine performance and shorten engine longevity. Not to mention court costs and fines for excessive noise.

If you want more volume from your exhaust, buy an aftermarket exhaust system and jet kit. Most kits can be installed at home. You don't have to be a master technician, but you must take your time, read and follow instructions, and have basic hand tools available. Research the task on-line before buying parts and performing the work.

Check "www.motorcycle-usa.com/forum" and other MC forums and chat with others about such modifications, etc...

I recommend buying the repair (service) manual for your MC, too. It'll pay for itself with the first home repair.

Look into Vance & Hines pipes and Stage 1 jet kits.

Respectfully,
