Motorcycle Repair: S&S Super E on stock 1990 Fatboy, stock air filter, air fuel mixture

Question
Southside,
I received a package of Harley Davidson trading cards in the mail in 1991.  In that package was a picture of the 1990 Fatboy.  I framed it and told my fiance, now wife, that's the Harley I want.  I bought this dream bike in '94 from Greenville, SC H.D.  They purchased a "collection" from an individual who got tired of dealing with dead batteries and bad gas, so he sold the collection.  I had the bike a year and wasn't satisfied with the way it ran.  Spit and backfired continuously.  Took to Radcliff HD (KY) and was informed that the stock carb had been adjusted.  They put stock jets back in the original carb and replaced the diaphram.  Ran better, but still sluggish.  Two years ago, I bought a Super E and installed on my "grey ghost"
Gas mileage dropped to nothing.  I can only get about 120 miles on a tank of fuel.  Inconvenient, but we finally made it to the "motherland" last August.  What a ride!  It never failed once, but is burning rich.  Fender gets black.  Can you give me a starting point on rejetting this stock engine.  I do think the baffles have been drilled out.  Bike is louder than stock pipes, but they are the originall pipes.  I would love to achieve that "potato, potato" sound when idling without having to play with throttle.  My brother in law has a '76 shovelhead that has the ultimate sound.  Anyway to acheive all with the Super E? Please advise, and thanks in advance...Joey

Answer
hi Joey.
first turn accell pump on right of carb off. there is a screw there on the right turn it in untill it is slightly bottomed, shut petcock off and remove the float bowl, remove low speed jet and main jet, low speed jet should be a # 28 and main jet a #68, reinstall float bowl, throw away the stock air/filter made of foam and install a K&N air/filter turn gas on and start bike. Now slowly turn in brass air/fuel mixture screw intill idle starts to slow down and the turn it out and idle will raise back up, keep turning it out untill the idles starts to lower and turn back in untill you get it between in where it starts to idle lower and out where it starts to lower, now set idle screw on left of carb to a good idle that is NOT a potato, potato idle. this will hammer the lower end bearings in the motor and you will be doing a complete motor over haul. your brother in law is killing his bike, dont do it to your bike(PLEASE)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you need a steady fast idle, now wick the throttle really fast. the bike will stumble. Now turn right accell pump screw out 1 full turn and wick throttle again it should be better. keep turning out accell pump screw 1/2 turn at a time untill it has NO stumble at all. ride free.
