Motorcycle Repair: Inconsistant cylinder plug firing on 87 goldwing, honda goldwing, valve adjustment

Question
Falcon,

I have a 1987 Honda Goldwing and it misses like hell at low speeds and then clears out once you get some R's to it but then it seems to go back to firing on 2 or 3 cylinders. A friend of mine had been storing it for awhile and I looked in the tank and didn't see any rust. Usually when a bike gets rust in the carb it just stays running bad but this one actually clears out for a little bit. Any suggestions of where to look after checking the plugs and coils.

Answer
Hi Troy.
I see two things that are wrong here, possibly more.  All but one are relatively minor.

1)  The carbs need cleaning, badly.  Major thing as dirty carbs will never run quite right.  Since the bike was being stored for a while, this is extremely likly to be the major, if not only problem.

2)  The carbs need synchronizing.  That will cause the bike to run poorly at a variety of rpms, especially low rpms.

3)  The valve adjustment may need to be done as well as ignition timing checked.  Do this after the first two things are done.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
